$50,000 Prize Purse Announced at 2015 Gran Fondo Whistler

The Giro, Sponsored by Robert J Macdonald top place prize is $15,000 for Men and $15,000 for Women.

After a successful 2014 event, the Giro, Sponsored by Robert J Macdonald, will return with double the prize purse to $50,000 at the 2015 RBC GranFondo Whistler on Saturday, September 12, 2015.

The race will provide competitive licensed category 1, 2, 3 riders an exciting opportunity to race the 122 km distance for a top place purse of $15,000. The event will split the cash prizing equally to the top 20 finishers in both the male and female categories. Registration opens on Wednesday, December 10 at noon PST for $150.

“The return of the Giro received a great welcome from the riders and the cycling community last year, inspiring us to take the race experience further for 2015,” says Neil McKinnon, founder of GranFondo Canada. “With Robert J Macdnald’s generous support, next year is going to be an exciting time. Not only are we able to provide one of the largest prize purses for a single day event in North America, we are also, able to further encourage the progress of cycling to the community.”

This will be the fourth time the Giro category will have been contested in the six-year history of the RBC GranFondo Whistler.
An expected 4,000 cyclists from around the world will gather in Vancouver’s Stanley Park to ride the Sea-to-Sky Highway on a dedicated car-free course to Whistler.

The elite field of Giro Athletes will depart ahead of the recreational riders.

Robert J Macdonald continues to be instrumental in helping the British Columbia community be more active. A founding RBC GranFondo Whistler sponsor and avid participant, he is a firm believer in exercise and the value of a balanced lifestyle.
