Dutchman Tom Dumoulin wins Giro stage one time trial

Tom Dumoulin took the first overall lead of the 2016 Giro d’Italia by winning stage one’s individual time trial by a fraction of a second.

The Giant-Alpecin rider stopped the clock on a flat 9.8km course starting and ending in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn in 11min 3sec, which was just ahead of runner-up Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) and six seconds faster than third-placed Andrey Amador (Movistar).

The Dutch rider said "It's incredible, better than I can imagine, especially in front of my home crowd in the Netherlands". The Dutchman was congratulated by the King.

Favorite Fabian Cancellara (Trek-Segfredo) came 8th, despite suffering with stomach flu. BMC's Silvan Dillier put in a great time to come 10th.

Dumoulin will now wear the race leader's pink jersey in Saturday's flat second stage from Arnhem to Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
