Kristofer Dahl takes Tour of Utah stage 1 sprint victory

Kristofer Dahl Silber Pro Cycling wins bunch sprint after break away caught with 5kms to go on the finishing circuit in Cedar City. Joe Dombroski Cannondale-Drapac finishes comfortably in the Peleton

Stage 1 from Zion Canyon to Cedar City rolled out neutralized zone of 16 miles until after the tunnel and boom the attacks started. Eventually a 4 man breakaway consisting of Daniel Jaramillo (UHC), Simon Pellaud (IAM), Adrien Costa (Axeon Hagens Berman) and Matteo Dal-Sin (Silber Pro Cycling).

The 4 man breakaway established a lead of 5 minutes, with Daniel Jaramillo taking the KOM points.

Rally seemed to be controlling the Peloton with 50 miles to, and then Phil Gaimon and team Canondale-Drapac took over the pace setting and started to chase.

With 31 miles to go the Peloton had close the gap to around 3 minutes. BMC Racing helped Cannondale-Drapac at the front in the chase.

Simon Pellaud (IAM) and Matteo Dal-Sin (Silber Pro Cycling) attacked on the descent getting a gap on the other 2 breakaway riders.

With 15 downhill miles to go the Peloton really put the hammer down and started top chase full gas.

By the time the two leaders Simon Pellaud (IAM) and Matteo Dal-Sin (Silber Pro Cycling) entered Cedar City the gap was down to 1 minute 30 seconds.

The pair were caught by the flat out Peleton with 3.5 miles to go.

Trek and IAM Cycling came to the front to take up the pace. With 1 km Robin Carpenter had a slight advantage, but it cam edown to a chaotic bunch sprint that saw Kristofer Dahl take the sprint just in front of Colin Joyce (Axeon Hagens Berman) and Rick Zabel (BMC Racing).

Previous winner Joe Dombroski finished comfortably in the Peloton in 33rd place alongside his Cannondale-Drapac temmates, who took up the chase of the breakaway from team Rally, with Phil Gaimon notably starting to reel the breakaway back, in the early stages on the climb of Bristlecone.
