Vuelta Stage 8: Lagutin wins the stage as Quintana attacks into Red

The 8th stage of the 2016 Vuelta was the first real test for the GC-contenders. Lagutin was the best rider in the early break of the day, while Nairo Quintana climbed to the red jersey on the super-steep final kilometres of La Camperona.

Despite his injuries, Contador is the second GC-rider to finish, clawing himself back into the Top 10

10 riders formed the day's breakaway after 10km of racing;  Sergey Lagutin, Jhonatan Restrepo, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Mattia Cattaneo, Loïc Chetout, Scott Thwaites. Zico Waeytens, Pieter Serry, Gatis Smukulis, Axel Domont, and Perrig Quemeneur.

The Peloton isn't interested, as none of the riders threaten the GC.

With the gap down to 9 minutes as the breakaway hits, the final climb to La Camperona – 8.3 kilometres at 7.5% with a steeper section at 24%. Waeytens, Smukulis and Restrepo go on the attack. Serry, Lagotin, Domont and Quemeneur bridge the gap and soon Restrepo is dropped. Serry can’t follow the pace either.

Lagutin kicks again on the super-steep last hundred metres and he climbs to his first Grand Tour stage win.

Quintana attacks what's left of the Peloton in final kilometre under the Flamme Rouge. Froome desperatley tries to close the gap but doesn't quite make it and Quintana forges on into the red jersey, while Contador, who looked top be struggling on the climb, passes Froome in sight of the line and moves into 7th in GC.

An amazing ride by Contador after his horrible crash in the run into the finish on Stage 7 yesterday.
