Eneco Tour:  Dylan Groenewegen wins Stage 1 Sprint

Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) won stage 1 of the Eneco Tour in a bunch sprint. The Dutch champion beat Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) to move into the overall lead.

Katusha led the bunch in the closing kilometre, but no one team managed to provide a final sprint train. In a very fragmented sprint, Groenewegen timed his effort perfectly and beat Bouhanni and Sagan on the line. Several sprinters were boxed out.

Groenewegen, showed great form after recenty riding the Tour of Britain.

A five-man break away including Bert Van Lerberghe (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise), Matteo Bono (Lampre-Merida), Laurens De Vreese (Astana), , Brian Van Goethem (Roompo Oranje Peloton) and Frederik Backaert (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) went away and built up a lead of 3 mins 40 secs.

The break reached the ‘Golden Kilometre’ for the intermediate sprints and the margin dropped after they had contested the bonus seconds and the breakaway was caught with three kilometres to go.

Danny van Poppel (Sky) was involved in a crash with 15 kilometres remaining.

Tomorrow's Stage 2 is a short time trial in Breda.
