Amber Neben wins Women's Time Trial at UCI World Championships

American cyclist Amber Neben has won the 2016 UCI World Championships Women's Time Trial. Ellen van Dijk and Katrin Garfoot complete the podium

Neben formed part of the second block of riders to hit the road for a 28.9km time trial in Doha, Qatar, and her dominance soon became clear as her times were consistently faster than those of her predecessors.

The 41-year-old needed 36:37.04 to complete the course and as such began a long wait as her principal riders were yet to make their appearance.

Ellen van Dijk of the Netherlands, one of the top favorites for the victory, featured in the third block of riders and appeared to be faster than Neben throughout the first half of the race. However, the Boels Dolmans rider lost terrain in the second half and ended up finishing six seconds behind the leader.

The remaining big guns all departed in the fourth and final block of riders. Lisa Brennauer and Anna van der Breggen disappointed from the start and were out of contention for a top spot by the time they reached the halfway-point.

Australia's Katrin Garfoot and Russia's Olga Zabelinskaya delivered a much better fight with Zabelinskaya only eight seconds behind Neben at the final checkpoint, but it was Garfoot to take bronze at eight seconds from the winner while Zabelinskaya had to settle for fourth place at 11 seconds.

After Jeannie Longo, Judith Arndt, Kristin Armstrong, Karin Thurig and Leontien van Moorsel, Neben becomes the sixth rider to win the World Time Trial title a second time. In addition, the gap between the two victories (eight years) is by far the largest between two wins for the same rider.
