Malaysia gets another Gran Fondo
In conjunction with Visit Perak 2017 and the Gran Fondo New York (GFNY), GFNY Malaysia will be held for the first time on April 23rd 2017
GFNY Malaysia leg coincides with Ipoh Cycle Fest 2017 which starts on the same day – April 23 2017.
This Asia’s Biggest Cycle Festival is expected to attract more than 20,000 visitors.
The start and finish of GFNY Malaysia is in Tambun, Perak, where the course will wind through lush rainforest and along limestone hills.
The route stretches 160km for Gran Fondo Race and 80km for Medium Fondo Race.
Speaking at the launch of the GFNY Malaysia, Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Seri Mirza Mohammad Taiyab said, “This is a good opportunity for participants because this race does not have any requirement, it is open for everybody to experience a cycling activity."
“Cycle tourism brings significant environmental benefits, compared to many other types of tourism,” he added.
Ipoh Cycle Fest, on the other hand, is made up of 17 categories and organisers hope to get the participation of 1,000 international and 2,000 Malaysian cyclists as well as at least 100 exhibitors.
The highlights are ICF Carnival, Holy Crit, Limestone Crit, ICF Junior Cup, ICF Night Ride, The Banjaran Quest, R+R Race, BMX Jam, Gatebridge 4x, King of Saiong, Toakas MTB XCC, Royal Belum Tour, Gopeng Tour, Lumut Tour, Taiping Tour and Singapore Ipoh tour.
Ipoh Cycle Fest 2017 will be held from April 23 to 30.
Mirza described Perak’s natural charms as a jewel waiting to be discovered and appreciated by Malaysians and foreigners alike.
Destination Perak chief executive officer and managing director Abd Raheem Mohamad said the programme would generate positive economic and social impact.
With 14 races worldwide next year, GFNY Malaysia has been announced as the fifth GFNY race, after GFNY Mexico City on March 26.
The race is open to cyclists of all levels, from amateur to professional, with the tagline “Be A Pro For A Day.”
The champions of each GFNY race will qualify to race at the Official World Championship in New York City for the Gran Fondo New York World Champion crown.
Every participant will receive a neon green GFNY race jersey made in Italy, which has become a sought-after badge of honour.
The GFNY 2016-2017 series will kick off in Colombia on Feb 26 and end in New York City on May 21.
GFNY MY Sdn Bhd, the licence holder for GFNY Malaysia, has appointed Destination Perak Sdn Bhd and X Camp Adventure Sdn Bhd in the role of overseeing GFNY Malaysia, organising and managing the race as well as the whole event.
“We expect up to 500 riders, international and Malaysian, for GFNY race. We received fairly good response from Singaporeans so far,” said Ipoh Cycle Fest principal and event director Amin Jay during the press conference.
