Philadelphia Flyers Announce First Annual Flyers Charity Classic On July 16

New major summer event to include 5K walk/run; 10 mile, 50K and 100K bike rides

Flyers Charity Classic, July 16, 2017Philadelphia, PA  - The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that the club is set to host a major summertime run, walk, and ride event this July, the Philadelphia Flyers Charity Classic. Scheduled for Sunday, July 16, 2017, the Flyers Charity Classic encompasses a 5K walk or run, a 10-mile family bike ride, as well as 50K and 100K bike rides.

The event is a joint venture of Flyers Charities and the Flyers Alumni Association together with g4 Productions, which specializes in large-scale, participatory sporting events. The event will also be supported by the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation department as well as the Philadelphia Police.

“We’ve proudly hosted the Flyers Charities 5K for five years now and are excited to enhance that event with a new summer date, new course, and the addition of a cycling component to welcome even more fans this year,” said Flyers President Paul Holmgren. “This new event will showcase our great city as a recreational leader, as these new routes will take runners and riders through very scenic courses.”

The day will allow Flyers fans of all ages the opportunity to run, walk, or ride down Broad Street and beyond in a variety of ways. Fans can choose to participate in one of the following four categories:

• 5K Walk/Run - This year, runners and walkers will start at the Wells Fargo Center complex and run through the scenic Navy Yard, returning to the Wells Fargo Center to cross the finish line.

• 10-Mile Family Bike Ride - Riders will begin by biking from the Wells Fargo Center complex to Broad Street, cycling up to and around City Hall before passing by Logan Square and the Philadelphia Museum of Art along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Cyclists will then ride along the Schuylkill River Trail until they hit South Street, eventually returning to Broad Street, en route to the Wells Fargo Center.

• 50K Bike Ride - Cyclists will start their ride at the Wells Fargo Center complex and travel north on Broad Street to and around City Hall, passing Logan Square and the Philadelphia Museum of Art as they continue down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. They will then continue the ride on Martin Luther King Drive until they hit Fairmount Park and pedal towards Bala Cynwyd before reaching the halfway point at West Mill Creek Park in Gladwyne. Philadelphia, riders will travel alongside the Schuylkill River via Main Street in Manayunk, crossing the Falls Bridge to Martin Luther King Drive, and the Schuylkill River Trail, until they turn on South Street, finally returning to the Wells Fargo Center.

• 100K Bike Ride - Cyclists will pedal out of the Wells Fargo Center complex and hit Broad Street, traveling north to and around City Hall, before riding down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to pass the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Riders will then continue along Martin Luther King Drive, through Fairmount Park, Bala Cynwyd, then Gladwyne. From there, the route will head through Narberth, Ardmore, past Haverford College, out into Newtown Square, and finally reach Malvern before looping back around through Paoli and Wayne, passing Villanova. Participants will make their way across the Schuylkill River and travel down Main Street in Manayunk and make the final leg of the course, crossing the Falls Bridge to follow Martin Luther King Drive and the Schuylkill River Trail to South Street, ultimately returning to the Wells Fargo Center via Broad Street.

Entry fees vary by course, with the 5K Walk/Run at $50 per person, 10-Mile Family Bike Ride at $50 per person or $100 for a family of four (children under 16), and both the 50K and 100K bike rides at the early bird rate of $100 per cyclist (earlybird ends May 15th)

All events will be timed by Lyn-Mark Computer Sports. Participants will also receive a Flyers goodie bag, race t-shirt, personalized bib number with chip timing, finisher’s medal, and post-race refreshments with their registration fee.

Funds raised from the Flyers Charity Classic will jointly benefit Flyers Charities and the Flyers Alumni Association. Both organizations support a multitude of worthy non-profits across the Greater Philadelphia Region.

Several Flyers Alumni will be participating in the races as well as captaining special teams that fans can join, including Bob Clarke, Paul Holmgren, Bob Kelly, Brad Marsh, Joe Watson, Todd Fedoruk, Doug Crossman, and more.
