Greg Van Avermaet wins Tour of Luxembourg

Classics and Olympic road race champion is looking to win a stage of the Tour de France this July

BMC Racing's Greg Van Avermaet continued his winning streak by winning the Tour of Luxembourg overall last weekend.

The punchy Belgian, who has won classic monuments like Paris Roubaix this year, won three stages and came second on two others, to win ahead of Xandro Meurisse and third placed Anthony Perez.

Greg van Avermaet won the fourth and final 174.6 km stage between Mersch and Luxembourg.

BMC controlled the peloton and caught the break with 36 km to go and led its leader into an ideal position to deal the final blow on the final climb up the Pabeierbierg wall, with gradients of 20 percent, declaring his status as the overall race leader that he had acquired the day before on the penultimate stage.

"I'm still not quite at the top of my form," said the 32-year-old who will be helping BMC co-leaders Richie Porte and Tejay van Garderen in next month's Tour de France.

"I want to win a stage on the Tour this year," said Van Avermaet, who won stages in both 2015 and 2016 and will be relishing a Tour packed with opportunities for a powerful puncher of his stature.
