Sir Chris Hoy apologises after criticizing middle-aged men in Lycra

British cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy has apologised after making comments about middle-aged male cyclists who wear Lycra

Hoy apologised after reading his article published in the latest edition of GQ Magazine, where he discussed middle-aged men in Lycra, aka MAMILs, as they are known.

In it he said Lycra was not flattering. And he suggested to MAMILs it was best left to eight stone cyclists.

“Lycra isn’t the most elegant material you can wear,” the now-retired six-time Olympic champion said.

“And professional cycling gear generally looks awful on pretty much anyone heavier than eight stone and with more than five per cent body fat.”

He also felt sorry for MAMILs, especially when they walked into a café dressed in Lycra and people were “sniggering at them”.

"I'm really sorry; reading it back it looks harsh & that wasn't my intention. Whatever your age/build, if ur on a bike u have my respect," he tweeted.

Despite the overcrowded roads, lack of laws to protect cyclists and lack of nationwide cycling infrastructure, cycling is one of the biggest growing sports in the United Kingdom.

Hoy said that too many people feel that they need to be decked out in "a full Team Sky Racing kit" to be taken seriously.

All tongue in cheek!

We forgive you Sir Chris Hoy, thanks for the style tips!
