Tehachapi GranFondo rolls Into Town

1,000 riders prepare for GranFondo festivities that start in downtown Tehachapi, CA, Sept. 15-16

Around 1,000 cyclists will line up for the 4th annual Tehachapi GranFondo next Saturday morning, Sept. 16 and spectators can join the riders at the 6 a.m. start and ring traditional cowbells to cheer them on, riders will experience the sun coming up on Tehachapi Boulevard

Event director Michelle Vance came up with the idea of a local GranFondo to attract attention to the beauty found in the surrounding Tehachapi mountains.

The Tehachapi GranFondo has been rated in the top 13 in the country and voted the Best Century in California the past three years.

VIP Dinner Tickets Still on Sale

The GranFondo festivities will begin on Friday, Sept. 15, with a VIP dinner, held at Centennial Park in Tehachapi. Catered by Steampunk Cafe, the dinner will include chicken Parmesan, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, and will cost $22 per ticket. Tickets to the VIP dinner can be purchased at City Hall and at the dinner. The purpose of the dinner is to recognize the major sponsors.

1,000 cyclists will tackle one of five courses: the Gran Fondo (104 miles), which tours all of Tehachapi and surrounding areas including Alpine and Keene; the MedioFondo (85 miles), the PiccoloFondo Plus (60 miles) and PiccoloFondo (38 miles), which tours the foothills of Tehachapi; and the FunFondo (18 miles), which includes some beautiful scenery too.

"Riders can switch routes on the day, depending on their fitness" Vance said.

KOM and QOM Prize sponsored by Adventist Health

New this year,  Adventist Health, are sponsoring the "King and Queen of the Mountain" competition.

The King and Queen will receive $1,000 for the fastest time in a timed section on the final part of the race up the mountain.

Cory Lockwood, a local cyclist, has come in with the best time every year since it started in 2014.

Of the 1,000 anticipated cyclists, 300 are local cyclists and residents of Tehachapi, with the remaining coming from other parts of California and further afield that appretiate the the town's welcome, the beauty, quiet and challenging roads that surround Tehachapi.

VIP dinner sponsor, Lehigh Cement will have 28 cyclists on the start line.

Only 100 Places Left

According to Vance, about 900 places have already been sold, and the other 100 will be sold the day of the event.

Registration has already closed, however it will reopen at 2 p.m. on Friday for last-minute registration.
