Tom Dumoulin wins 2017 Time Trial World Championship

Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands) dominated the Time Trial finishing ahead of Primoz Roglic (Slovenia) in second place and Chris Froome (Great Britain) took bronze

It was a short time trial of only 31 kms. The course was two laps before climbing the formidable Mount Fløyen, a cruel 3.4-km of 11 switchbacks of 9.7%.

Tom Dumoulin, Chris Froome (Great Britain) and Rohan Dennis (Australia) were the favourites to medal. Nelson Oliveira (Portugal) set the fastesttime early on an sat in the hot seta for most of the afternoon, he switched his TT bike for the final climb, and in the end settled for fourth place, 1m 28sec behind Dumoulin.

Dumoulin almost caught Froome, who set out 90 seconds before him, in the final metres of the race atop the climb of Mount Fløyen. Dumoulin finished 58 seconds ahead of Primoz Roglic, while Chris Froome finished 1m 21s down.

Winner of the Giro d'Italia in May, Dumoulin skipped the Vuelta a España in order to build the second half of his season around the time trial rainbow jersey in Bergen.

With a wide smile and face of excitement, Dumoulin said after the finish: “I can’t believe it, it’s really amazing! I thought my power meter was off because it was so high. I felt really, really good. After it started raining I had to take the corners really slow, especially in the first kilometre of the climb with all the twists and turns, every corner my back wheel was slipping because I had my TT tyres on, as I thought it would stay dry."

He added: “I chose not to take the risk swapping bikes. I think I’m one of the guys who can do a really good climb on the TT bike and have no problems handling it, so I think it was the right decision. Doing the double is amazing. Last Sunday it was a bit of a surprise that we won with the team, it was an amazing day. I think today is less surprising – I was one of the favourites, but in some ways that makes it harder.”
