Great success for the fifth edition of the Granfondo Sanremo – Sanremo

“A great day of sport and cycling on the roads of our territory”. These were the first words of Fabrizio Fusini, President of UC San Remo, at the end of the fifth edition of the Granfondo San Remo – San Remo “la Classicissima”

An event that saw almost 700 participants registered, some of whom even came from overseas, from places like Russia, England, Ireland, Spain and France.

The route, changed for reasons of safety related to the bad weather that occurred in the days preceding the event, took the participants to touch on some of the most beautiful villages in the Eastern region of Liguria. After the start in San Remo, the group headed east up to the mouth of the Val Nervia. Passing Camporosso, Dolceacqua, Isolabona, Apricale and Bajardo, the cyclists reached Ceriana and the Poggio.

Once more arriving at the coast, they went along the Aurelia up to San Lorenzo al Mare and then faced the legendary climb of the Cipressa, penultimate difficult stretch of the professionals of the Milan – San Remo. From Santo Stefano al Mare there was another climb to Terzorio and Pompeiana, with successive stages to Castellaro and another re-entry onto the Aurelia. The last kilometers saw the participants challenged by the famous climb of the Poggio, at whose peak the finish line was set. The photos accompanying this article were taken by Silvia Galliani. The route had an overall length of 109 km with a height differential of about 1700 meters.

The final victory went to Dario Giovine (Team Isolmant) with a finishing time of 3 hours, 10 minutes and 27 seconds, and an average speed that was over 34 Km/h. Behind him, three minutes later, arrived Gentile Romolo (ASD Pedale Elettrico). Climbing onto third place on the podium was Roberto Bommarito (GS Bicisport Giant Ospedaletti). The women’s winning classification was won by Valentina Carretta (ASD All4Cycling BDC Forum Team) who finished the course in 3 hr. 31 min. 04 sec. The rankings for associations was won by ASD Rodman Azimut Squadra Corse with 52 participants registered, followed by GS Bicisport Giant Ospedaletti (30) and by Team De Rosa Santini (25).

At the end of the awarding of prizes in the various categories, with technical products and local ones of the territory, we proceeded with the Grand Prize of the Mountain and the flying finish line of Terzorio. To close the day there was a raffle of many lottery prizes, among them a valuable Giant frame. Participating in the ceremony were the Regional Tourist Councillor Gianni Berrino, the Councillor for Sport for the Municipality of San Remo, Eugenio Nocita, the Manager of the Casino spa, Olmo Romeo and the Trustee of Coni, Carlo Borella. All of them complimented the high sporting and organizational level of the event, also emphasizing the important touristic aspect of the number of participants registering this year. The logistic base was the Palafiori, where there was also a shower service and the pasta party.

“I would like to thank the police force, the civil protection, the sponsors, UC San Remo and the volunteers, without whom an event of this type would be impossible” – concluded Fabrizio Fusini “The organizational efforts have been amply repaid by the affection and the confidence that all the cycling enthusiasts are showing us. The number of individuals registered for this edition actually exceeded the pre-race expectations. The next appointment is for 2019 with the sixth edition of the Granfondo San Remo – San Remo “La Classicissima”, with the commitment to offer an event that is always at a higher level”.

In the meantime the organizing machine has already been set in motion for the traditional Granfondo Milan – San Remo, scheduled for 10th June.
