Viva la revolution at RBC GranFondo Whistler!
After 8 years riding from Vancouver to Whistler, the iconic event announces a new Medio format to encourage new cyclists to join the sport and be active
RBC GranFondo Whistler has just announced wholesale changes to their 55km Medio category with a raft of benefits designed to make cycling and the challenge of an event as accessible as possible. Trust us; this one’s going to be good.
For friends and families
Traditionally having either started or finished in a logistically challenging location, the Medio will now both start and finish in the world-famous mountain resort of Whistler. While Gran Fondo (122km / 76mi) and Forte (152km / 95mi – limited places remaining!) riders depart from Vancouver and ride to Whistler, Medio riders will travel south from Whistler for the first time in RBC GranFondo history and split off onto their own unique out-and-back course along the stunning British Columbia valleys.
On the return leg, Medio riders will merge back in with the rest of the field, so that friends and families can ride in different categories and still be together, crossing the finish line as one for a special celebration.
Unlike other categories which start early, the Medio will feature a relaxed 9:15am start time. You’ll be able to travel up to Whistler on Friday night, enjoying a hotel stay and waking up rested. The event itself has introduced a new Friday transport shuttle up from Vancouver, while Whistler.com are currently offering multiple-night booking incentives, letting you stay and enjoy the famous RBC GranFondo Whistler celebration zone, complete with live music and ceremonies on Saturday night.
Open to all
The Medio will have a protective neutralized rollout from the start and along the Sea-to-Sky highway (it’s as beautiful as the name suggests) up until Callaghan Valley, where the road is then closed to traffic. Riders will feel safe and kept to the same speed up until this point.
Timing only starts at the gentle Valley climb, so racers are kept at bay while those wanting to simply enjoy their day get the spotlight. At the top of this short, rolling hill, there’s a unique Medio rest stop, replete with the signature RBC GranFondo Whistler full-amenity lineup.
Whistler is full of excellent childminding companies who know that their clients want to enjoy their time in the resort, and RBC GranFondo Whistler similarly put on a full set of kids’ activities at the finish line in tandem with the local governing body of the sport, Cycling BC.
The new 55km Medio is unique and accessible for all. There’s never been a better way to experience this bucketlist ride, and our pick for North America’s Best Gran Fondo 2018.
