Smashed up Armstrong donates $10,000 to Adrien Costa who lost leg in climbing accidentTouted as one of America’s best young cycling prospects, having won stages at the Tour of Utah and the Tour de Bretagne overall in 2016.

Costa who rides for Axeon Hagens Berman was taking a break from cycling when the accident happened.

Two hikers were able to alert emergency services which arrived in time to take Costa to hospital and save his life, but the injuries to his leg meant doctors had no choice but to amputate it above the knee.

Axel Merckx from Axeon Hagens Berman set up the fund to help Costa with his medical and rehabilitation expenses.

Since the page was set up, the total has surpassed $102,000 on Friday afternoon, the goal being $100,000.

Armstrong who himself ended up in hospital this week after crashing heavily whilst mountain biking said "Adrien Costa was a "next level" cyclist that was feeling the pressures of the sport and was taking a break. Sadly, he was recently in a climbing accident that led to a leg amputation. The Armstrong family is in for 10K. All our best Adrien. You got this."
