Lotto Soudal's Thomas De Gendt  wants to ride all three Grand Tours in 2019

Lotto Soudal's Thomas De Gendt has his sights on riding all three Grand Tours in 2019

De Gendt known as the "breakaway man" for his daring long distance attacks, loves setting himself big challenges. Recently he cycled over 1,000 kms from the Il Lombardiar oad race in Italy, all the way back to Belgium with team mates Tim Wellens.

Now he decided to ride the 2019 Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.

"I will start at the Tour Down Under, then Paris-Nice, the Volta a Catalunya, the Tour de Romandie, the Giro, the Tour and the Vuelta," explained De Gendt to the Belgian press.

"I will recover in between them. I still have to discuss it with the team but I can more or less choose my own program."

The Belgian confirmed his plans whilst riding the new cobbled Berg Ten Houte, in the East Flemish municipality of Maarkedal, where there is a new strip of cobblestones to attract the Spring Classics. "It is more difficult than it looks," said the rider.

"This would be a perfect opener for the finale of a big race, after this you would have to work a little to maintain your position."
