Remco Evenepoel: I'll be back even stronger!

The Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider says his 2020 racing season is over after he suffered multiple injuries in a shocking fall at Il Lombarida in Italy last weekend,

With a fractured pelvis and a right lung contusion, he doesn't expect to return this season says he will come back even stronger in 2021.

“First of all, I want to thank all the people who supported me and helped me in the last couple of hours starting from the moment of the crash until now actually.

“Unfortunately, my season is over so far. We have no rush. And we have all the time to plan a good comeback physically.

“We will do everything to become a better rider and to become stronger than ever before.”, said the 20-year-old said,

Evenepoel, who had already won four stage races, was the favourite to take the win in Il Lombardia.

With 50 kms to go a group of seven riders including Bennett, Fuglsang, Vlasov, Evenepoel, Ciccone, Nibali and Mollema were left after the top of the Muro di Sormano.

Nibali, known for his descending skills, who trains in the area, went full gas on the descent, after around 10 kms of descending in harrowing pictures Remco Evenpoel was seen crashing over the side of a bridge into a deep reveen.

“I want to thank you all because you supported me so much. I could not answer all the messages because there were so many, but just I see everything and I feel everything. So just know that your support really touches me and will help me in a positive way.”

The descent of the Sormano is known as one of the fastest and most technical on the professional circuit. In the 2017 edition of Il Lombardia, several riders crashed into a ravine on a different part of the descent. Jan Bakelants, Laurens de Plus, Simone Petilli and Daniel Martinez were all injured in the crash in 2017.

He was due to make his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia in October, but will look to 2021 to ride the biggest races.
