Angliru the Penultimate Stage in the 2017 Vuelta a Espana

The legendary climb of the Angliru will feature in 2017 edition of the Tour of Spain which includes 2 time trials, 8 mountain stages. Climb in the Sierra Nevada also features. 

One Fearsome Climb: The Angliru

Although the rise of the Angliru has been climbed only six times in the Vuelta, it is one of the most feared mountain passes in Europe.

The climb has frightening figures. It's 13 kms with an average gradient of nearly 10%. The 6th kilometer near the summit, the average is 13% average, with a stretch of 23.5%.

There are many strecthes of at least 15%, including 150 meters at 22% near the summit.. The maximum slope is reached at a place called the Cuena the Cabres, with 23.5% of 300 meters, about two kilometers from the summit.

The final is barely tolerable either, the last 500 meters is at least 15% gradient.

José Maria Jiménez was the first Vuelta Pro rider to the top in 1999. Gilberto Simoni  in 2000, Roberto Heras  in 2002, Alberto Contador in 2008 and Jose Cobo Acebo Juan in 2011.

The last winner to date is Frenchan Kenny Elissondein 2013.

The official route of the 2017 Vuelta a Espana will take place on January 12th in Madrid.
