Peter Sagan wins uphill sprint finish
Peter Sagan of Bora-hansgrohe has won a second stage win at Tirreno-Adriatico. He was the strongest in an uphill sprint at the end of stage 5.
The stage started with the departure of Orica-Scott's Adam Yates, who had been in second place after Saturday's stage but abandoned due to illness.
The day's 210km course included some tough climbs and was mostly hilly in the last 60 kilometers.
Mattia Cattaneo (Androni-Giocattoli), Mikel Landa (Sky), Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) and Bob Jungels (Quick-Step Floors) formed the breakway but were never too far ahead and eventually were caught with 44 kms to go.
Former world champion Michal Kwiatkowski from Team Sky attacked but was quickly reeled in.
He launched another attack along with Tejay Van Garderen, Rafal Majka and Fabio Felline, but the peloton was determined to prevent any escape.
Vasil Kiryienka of Team Sky and Astana's Luis Leon Sanche attacked and got a gap. Sanche was then joined by BMC Racing Team's Van Garderen who attacked from the chase group with ten kilometers to go.
The two were caught with just over three kilometers left in the stage.
Nairo Quintana was the first to attack but didn't get much of a gap but resulted in many getting dropped including Sagan.
Sagan recovered and fought back to the Quintana group. The world champion sprinted by himself and easily beat the climbers to take the stage.
Thibaut Pinot of FDJ came in second and LottoNL-Jumbo's Primoz Roglic took third place.
Quintana remains in the lead of the overall classification.
