Gaviria outsprints Sagan to win in Tirreno-Adriatico
Fernando Gaviria of Quick-Step Floors won the sixth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico. The Colombian beat Peter Sagan of Bora-hansgrohe in a close final sprint
The penultimate stage of 168 kilometers began in Ascoli Piceno and finished in Civitanova Marche. The course some climbin but not enough to change the likely outcome of a bunch sprint.
Ben Gastauer (AG2R La Mondiale), Davide Ballerini (Androni Giocattoli), Rafaello Bonusi (Androni Giocatolli), Simone Andreetta (Bardiani CSF), Mirco Maestri (Bardiani CSF), Alan Marangoni (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Pavel Kochentkov (Katusha-Alpecin) and Joonas Henttala (Novo Nordisk) formed the breakaway of the day and gained 3 minutes over the peloton.
with 20 kilometers to go the gap to the breakaway was down to 40 seconds. Peter Sagan, Fabio Felline and Niki Terpstra decided to bridge across and push on but the peloton were having none of it and brought it all back together with 2 kms to go.
There was a bit of elbowing and fighting for space in the narrow road leading to the final sprint.
Quick-Step's lead out train was perfectly positioned and launched Gaviria across the finish line ahead of Sagan and Trek-Segafredo's Jasper Stuyven.
Movistar's Nairo Quintana retains the blue leader's jersey ahead of the final time trial on Tuesday and baring any accidents, is looking to take the overall win of this year's race.
