Robin Carpenter Wins Joe Martin Stage Race
After a late-stage win at Joe Martin Stage Race, Holowesko|Citadel is poised for the Sunny King Criterium
Holowesko|Citadel p/b Hincapie Sportswear started out a little slow at the Joe Martin Stage Race, but they quickly readjusted, pulling out a win at the conclusion of the weekend. Robin Carpenter took the Stage 4 title on Sunday after a bonus sprint, edging out Eric Marcotte of Cyclance Cycling for the overall GC.
Going into Sunday, the team needed to make up 16 seconds on Rally’s Adam De Vos. Rough weather proved difficult riding conditions, but it didn’t slow Carpenter down.
“Robin was able to open up a 20-second gap on the field, and with the time bonus for winning the stage, it was more than enough to displace De Vos,” says Thomas Craven, chief sports director. “Rally fought hard to the end, but it basically came down to Robin’s raw strength, bike handling skills, and plain ol’ grit in the final laps.” Craven credits Michelin’s Power Tires and Felt’s state-of-the-art bicycle for also helping to give Carpenter the edge.
“After a disappointing couple of days where we botched the sprint leadout, I came into the crit feeling like I had something to prove,” adds Carpenter. “I was able to surprise Rally and open my advantage through the tricky turns on course. I started to believe I could win when the gap got close to 30 seconds with 10 laps to go. After countering an attack from Evan Huffman I had a gap on the breakaway with four laps to go and from there I fully committed. I’m very pleased to take the overall win in such dramatic fashion.”

Up next for Holowesko|Citadel is the Sunny King Criterium and Anniston McClellan Road Race in Anniston, Alabama, beginning April 8. Carpenter will not be attending, as he’ll be preparing for Tour of the Gila, aiming for the overall win. Lineup for Sunny King includes Ty Magner, Miguel Bryon, Oscar Clark, John Murphy, Brendan Rhim, and Andrei Krasilnikau.
