Andre Greipel wins the second stage and the Maglia Rosa
Greipel out sprinted Roberto Ferrari and Jasper Stuyven to win his seventh Giro d'Italia stage win
It was a long day for the Peloton. An early break of five riders; Ilia Koshevoy (Wilier Triestina), Daniel Teklehaimanot (Dimension Data), Lukasz Owsian (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), Evgeny Shalunov (Gazprom - Rusvelo), Simone Andreetta (Bardiani CSF).
Sam Bennett from Bora - hansgohe, not feeling well, was dropped by the Peloton on the final climb up to Genna Slanna.
Simone Andreetta (Bardiani CSF) took the KOM points from the breakaway, as they were all reeled in by the Peloton at the top of the final climb.
Nibali and Team Bahrain-Merida went to the front and pushed the pace on the descent.
Trek-Segafredo's sprinter Nizzolo was having a bad day and was dropped several times, eventualy he lost contact on a small climb on the final descen.
Somehow Inur Zakarin from Katusha was dropped on the descent, and was seen all on his own with around 7 kms to go.
His whole Katusha team dropped back and desperately time trialed him back, having to make up a time gap of 28 seconds. Amazingly, they were able to deliver him to the back of the peloton just before the 3 kms to go marker.
In the final sprint Postlberger, Gavira, Greipel, Ewan were all there. Postlberger went early and faded.
Ewan seemed to pull his foot out of his pedal and slowed.
Andre Greipel surged ahead in front Roberto Ferrari and Jasper Stuyven who were second and third respectively.
Tomorrow's stage 3, from Tortoli to Cagliari is 148km. The stage is almost flat with few mild hills along the course. After Villasimius there are some short punchy climbs along the coastal route. After that the road becomes flat toward the finish line in Cagliari to what’s likely to be a another bunch sprint. Join us tomorrow and follow and watch live here.
