Fernando Gaviria wins his second Giro stage sprint
The Colombian Quick-Step Floors sprinter won the final sprint on stage 5 to take his second stage win of the 2017 Giro d'Italia
The breakaway of the day was established very soon as the flag dropped, consisting of two riders, Evgeny Shalunov (Gasprom) and Maciej Paterski (CCC Sprandi Polkowice).
They built up a maximum lead of around Evgeny Shalunov (Gasprom) and Maciej Paterski (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) with just over 3 mins with 100 kms to go.
The peloton started to chase, led by QuickStep-Floors and Lotto Soudal.
With 14 kms to go the peloton caught the two escapees and the pace increased in the run into the final laps around Messina, Vincenzo Nibali's home town.
Unfortunately for Luka Pibernik from Bahrain-Merida, he didn't hear the bell for the final lap and raised his arms thinking he had won. The sprinters teams steamed passed him, and his joy was turned to embarrasment.
In the final sprint, the Quick-Step floors train came from the back and delivered Gaviria to the front, just as Sam Bennett burnt all his matches. Gaviria powered past him and celebrated a few bike lengths ahead to take his second stage win in this year's race.
No real change on the overall classification. Bob Jungels keeps the Maglia Rosa for another day.
