Philippe Gilbert wins a Crash marred stage 2

Quick-Step Floor's Philippe Gilbert won the 2nd stage sprint as Stefan Kung retains the leaders jersey

Five riders established the breakaway of the day and gained a lead of more than 5 minutes which consisted of Nick Dougall (Dimension Data), Lasse Norman Hansen and Conor Dunne (Aqua Blue Sport), Antoine Duchesne (Direct Energie) and Nick van der Lijcke (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij).

There were a couple of big crashes that left Steven Lammertink (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Jonas Koch (CCC Sprandi Polowice) out of the race.

The biggest with aorund 25 kilometres to go involved Rohan Dennis (BMC) who was left on his own devices to chase back on, over 2 minutes behind.

At the front Jan Bakelants (AG2R-La Mondiale), Damiano Caruso (BMC) and Rui Costa (UAE-Team Emirates) attacked wanting to deny a sprint finish, but the chasing peloton caught them with 10 kms to go.

Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet  counter attacked but was soon brought back.

The stage came down to the final expected sprint. Gilbert out sprinted Patrick Bevin and Anthony Roux with Michael Albasini (Orica-Scott) and Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) 4th and 5th and Peter Sagaan in 8th place.

With the absence of Rohan Dennis, BMC Racing's Stefan Küng (BMC) took the GC lead ahead of  Michael Matthews and Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), just 1 second behind.

Tomorrow's Stage 3 on Monday June 12th from  Menziken to Bern is 159 km, is a fairly flat stage that will suit the spinters.

Tune in from 10:00 EST, 15:00 GMT, 16:00 CET daily.
