Ty Magner wins opening stage at Tour of Utah
Tyler Magner of Holowesko-Citadel P/B Hincapie Sportswear pulls on the leaders jersey at the Tour of Utah after winning Monday's opening stage
The first stage of the 2017 edition started and finished in Logan and included two ascents of the third category Logan Canyon. The length of the route was 135 miles.
A group of eight riders established the initial breakaway; Joshaua Berry, Jacob Rathe, Simone Andretta, Miguel Diez, Tyler Williams, Andres Corrales, Eder Moctezuma, Brian Mcculloch, Cortlan Brown and Andrei Krasilnikau.
The breakaway built an advantage of about seven minutes until the peloton slowly began to reel them in.
The breakaway was eventually caught by the first chase group after a split took place in the peloton.
In the final sprint, Magner powered past his rivals to take the victory ahead of Chris Lawless (Axeon Hagens Berman) and Travis McCabe (UnitedHealthcare), and is the first leader in the overall standings.
The 2017 Tour of Utah consists of seven stages and finishes in Salt Lake City on August 6.
The overall winner will succeed last year's champion Lachlan Morton.
