Froome extends his lead at the individual time trial

Britain blitzes time trial and extends lead to nearly 2 minutes as Kelderman moves up to third ahead of Zakarin, while Contador jumped ahead of Fabio Aru and Esteban Chaves to fifth

Overall race leader Chris Froome of Team Sky dominated Stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana, a 40km time-trial from the Circuito de Navarra to Logroño in northern Spain.

In the end he won by  29 seconds with a time of 47 min 00.51 seconds.

All eye's were on Contador, at the finish line, Contador arrived to a hero’s welcome, his time of 47 min 59.82 sec. In the end it would be the fifth fastest time, both Zakarin and Nibali narrowly overhauled him in the final moments.

Kelderman finished the day second, with Vincenzo Nibali, Inur Zakarin and Alberto Contador closely grouped in the minor placings.

Froome’s extended lead over Nibali to 1m 58 esc, and with just five stages to go until the Vuelta finishes in Madrid, solidyfying his claim a Tour-Vuelta double, given Team Sky's dominance on the roads of Spain so far.

The ride of the day was done by Bahrain-Merida’s Nibali, second overall and not noted as a particularly strong time-triallist he finished strongly to retain his second place overall.
