Castelli unveils 2018 Giro d’Italia Maglia Rosa

Back after a 26-year hiatus, Castelli is back on board to design and produce the famous Giro d’Italia leaders’ jerseys

The last rider to wear a maglia rosa made by Castelli was Miguel Indurain, winner of the 1992 Giro.

From 2018, Castelli becomes the producer of the jerseys worn by the leaders of the four classifications of the Giro d’Italia, including the celebrated pink jersey, which is recognized around the world as signifying the overall leader of the race. Now, unveiling the maglia rosa produced by Castelli for 2018, the company adds that it is fired up with ‘passion’ for this year’s 101st Giro d’Italia, which runs from 4-27 May 2018.

The Giro leader’s jersey was in previous years produced by Castelli – and was worn by many champions, beginning with Giovanni Battaglin, the victor in 1981, and concluding with Miguel Indurain, who won the race in 1992. In between, the Castelli-produced pink jersey graced the shoulders of Saronni, Hinault, Moser and Bugno, to name just a few.

A four-year agreement, which begins with the next Corsa Rosa in 2018 and extends through 2021, will allow the best cyclists in the world to wear Castelli.

Steve Smith, Castelli Brand Manager, said “It’s not just a jersey; it is a highly cherished object that represents the ultimate goal for a cyclist in Italy and in the world. And it’s not just fabric; it is a symbol of the sweat that is required to win it, and it is an honour that elevates the lowliest of riders, even just for a day.”

He continued, “This is why we wanted to pay tribute to the Giro and its champions with something truly unparalleled. We have created special jerseys featuring details that enhance them and make them unique: subtle references scattered along the fabric like treasures for cycling lovers and fans of the Giro to discover, from a very special zipper featuring the symbol of the never-ending trophy to the relief print of the name of the classification that the jersey represents.”

Beginning this year, Castelli will create the pink jersey – along with the blue, cyclamen and white jerseys for the leaders in the mountains, points and young rider classifications – adding a new chapter to the brand’s long history, which began in 1876 and has ‘always been linked to the champions of the Giro d’Italia, the toughest race in the world’s most beautiful place’.

Founded in Milan in 1874, Castelli ‘creates apparel that defines modern cycling’. Castelli USA is located in Portland, Oregon - castelli-cycling.com
