Impey wins Tour Down Under as Greipel Strikes Again
South African rider Daryl Impey wrapped up the Tour Down Under as the overall Victor, as Andre Greipel took the final stage sprint in Adelaide
South African cyclist Daryl Impey has won this year's Tour Down Under in South Australia after the final stage sprint was won by veteran rider Andre Greipel, who also won the opening stage last Tuesday.
Greipel notched 18 stage victories over the years he has competed in the event.
Stage 6 was raced over 90 kilometres on a city-street circuit in Adelaide, there was a crash during the final lap but none of the major contenders got caught up in the trouble.
Greipel just managed to hold off Caleb Ewan at the finish line, "It wasn't an easy one. The team has done a great job to deliver me a winning position," Greipel said after his stage victory.
Impey said he was thrilled to be overall winner, "Thrilled… sometimes the stars line up and everything goes well and according to plan".
He dedicated his win to his wife and children for supporting him through his cycling career.
Logan Owen was part of a breakaway that was finally caught by the peloton with more than two laps to go, and was named "most combative rider" of the final stage.
Nicholas Dlamini secured the King of the Mountain's title and World Champion Peter Sagan took the Green Jersey sprinters title.
