Adam Yates wins stage to Scarponi's Hometown of Filottrano

Mitchelton-Scott's Adam Yates  won the fifth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico which paid tribute to the late Michele Scarponi

The British pro cyclist crossed the finish line on his own after an attack on the final climb.

It was a brutal stage, coined the "Muri" or "the walls", 178 kilometres from Castelraimondo to Filottrano, the hometown of the late Michele Scarponi. The entire route, particularly the final, was a fitting tribute to the Italian rider who was killed by a car while training in April 2017.

Four riders established a breakaway; Dario Cataldo (Astana), Iljo Keisse (Quick-Step Floors), Kristijan Koren (Bahrain-Merida) and Steve Morabito (Groupama-FDJ) and built a lead of more than six minutes. Meanwhil, in the peloton, it was BMC Racing Team who worked hard to protect the leader's jersey of Damiano Caruso.

Throughout the stage local had out up banners and decorations in honour of Scarponi. The climbs proved difficult, and one by one they were dropped leaving Cataldo on his own.

With eleven kilometres to go, Cataldo was caught by the peloton being led by Team Sky. The final climb to Filottrano blew the peloton apart, Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) attacked a got away.

Behind, the favourites remained together, with 1 km to go, Astana's Alexey Lutsenko attacked but nobody followed him.

The finish line was decorated with pictures of Scarponi and his team Astana.  Yates solo'd to victory several seconds ahead of the peloton containing the GC favorites.

Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) sprinted for second and Kwiatkowski came third.

With bonus finishing time for third place was enough for Kwiatkowski to take the lead in the overall General Classification.
