Thibaut Pinot takes overall victory at the Tour of the Alps

Mark Padun (Bahrain-Merida) won the last stage after an attack in the final kilometres

Padun took the stage with an attack in the final kilometre while Thibaut Pinot won overall classification.

The last stage of the Alpine race was 162 kilometres long and featured part of the circuit that will be used in the 2018 World Championships.

The breakaway got away after 30 kilometres including Manuel Senni (Bardiani-CSF), Francesco Gavazzi (Androni-Sidermec), Guy Niv (Israel Cycling Academy) and Francois Bidard (AG2R La Mondiale).

They built up a maximum lead of over eight minutes but started to lose it's strength with successive climbs of Olympia.. With 30 kilometres to go, David de la Cruz (Sky) attacked and bridged across to the breakaway.

With 20 kilometres to go, the peloton caught the breakaway and Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez attacked. Behind, the favourites stayed together until Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain-Merida) attacked and race leader Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) followed with 16 kms to go.

They caught Lopez, behind other contenders including Chris Froome (Sky), George Bennett (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates) tried to close the gap and with six kilometres to go, they caught the trio. It was then Mark Padun (Bahrain-Merida) attacked.

The Ukranian crossed the finish first with, George Bennett second and Astana's Jan Hirt third

Pinot arrived in the main group, enough for him to win the General Classification. Pozzovivo was second and Lopez.third overall.

Giro d'Italia favorites Thibaut Pinot, Domenico Pozzovivo, Miguel Angel Lopez, Christopher Froome, George Bennett and Fabio Aru were all in the top six putting them on course in the Battle for Pink starting on May 4th in Israel.
