Sam Bennett wins final sprint on rain soaked Imola Circuit
Heavy Rain causes panic and huge attacks as GC riders fight to limit any loses. Bennett wins his second stage.
With 30 kms to go the stage from Osimo to Imola saw heavy rain which caused chaos. The peloton has split in the heavy rain, with sprint favourite Viviani and white jersey Carapaz were caught out in the group behind.
The day's breakawy was caught with 13 kms to go and Tim Wellens went on the attack. Team Sky's Sergio Henao attacked bridged up to Wellens. Diegi Ulissi was the next to attack and the Matteo Mohoric was next.
But the the peloton was bearing down on the escapees. The catch was made with 300m to go and with 200m to go Sam Bennett powered away, with little or no reaction from the peloton. Bennett powered past Mohoric and took the stage comfortably in front of what wa left of the peloton.
Viviani was dropped a couple of times and Bennett now poses a real threat to Viviani's Sprinter jersey.
No change to the overall classification and tomorrow's stage is another flat stage.
The real drama begins on Saturday with the climax on the slopes of the Monte Zoncolan, over 100,000 spectators are expected to line the side of the Mountain.
