Froome secures Pink Jersey as Mikel Nieve wins final mountain stage
Mikel Nieve soloed to Stage 20 victory atop Cervinia, behind Dumoulin attacked, but Froome followed to secure the Pink Jersey
Chris Froome has written himself into the history books becoming the first British rider to win the Giro d'Italia and win all three Grand Tours.
Yesterday Froome shocked cycling with a bold 50 mile out attack on his rivals and took back over 3 minutes to snatch the Pink Jersey from Dumoulin.
A large breakaway of 27 riders went away on today's final mountain stage, but in the end, it was Mitchelson-Scotts Mikel Nieve who attacked his breakaway companions to solo to the finish.
Behind on the final climb Dumoulin put in several attacks to soften up Froome, instead Froome countered and dropped Dumoulin who slowly clawed his way back shaking his head.
The two crossed the finish line 6 minutes behind Nieve. Just in front Carapaz and Lopez crossed the having battled for the White Jersey to the bitter end.
Thibault Pinot cracks on the final climb
Pinot was seen in a terrible state, looking sick on the final climb up to Cervinia. Losing well over 10 minutes all all hopes of a podium place, he was encouraged by his FDJ team mates to finish the stage.
George Bennett in hot water after comparing Froome's performance on Stage 19 to Flloyd Landis
George Bennett and Mitchelson-Scott had to clarify their comments regarding Froome's shock win on Stage 19 ,after Bennett compared it to Floyd Landis's win at La Toussiare in the Tour de France many year ago. Landis rode away from his rivals on the final climb to win the Tour de France a day after struggling, however he later test positive for Testosterone and admitted doping, his title taken away from him.
Bennett has to retract his comparison after cycling fans and the media misconstrued his comments to imply that Froome's performance was drug enhanced.
