Team Sky Take Control: Thomas in Yellow as Froome takes back Time
Stage 11 was an attack festival from start to finish, Team Sky set the pace and delivered their favorites to the front of the race on the final climb of the Cormet de Roseland
Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) took victory on the summit finish to La Rosière on stage 11 and moved into the overall lead.
Thomas sprinted past breakaway rider Mikel Nieve (Mitchelton-Scott) in the final few hundred metres to take victory.
Thomas had attacked from the Team Sky train on the final climb and bridged across to Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), and attacked again to overhaul old team mate Mikel Nieve just before the line.
Dumoulin came second, while Chris Froome was able to attack from the Sky Train later and took third place putting time into his rivals, including Quintana, Bardet, Nibali and Roglic.
Thomas is a 1m 25 secs ahead of team mate Froome, just ahead of Dumoulin who also put in an impressive performance to move into third overall.
Team Sky’s riders held firm in the face of great pressure on a short, sharp 108.5 km test. Luke Rowe worked hard early, before Gianni Moscon, Wout Poels, Jonathan Castroviejo and Michal Kwiatkowski set a fierce tempo. With Kwiatkowski finishing his effort and Egan Bernal slipping back after a strong ride, Thomas picked his moment and launched a stinging acceleration.
Thomas said afterwards “It’s unreal I didn’t expect it at all, we were low on numbers so it was more instinct [to attack] so we didn’t get caught having to ride - I saw a little gap.
