Geraint Thomas is the first British Rider to win on L'Alpe d'Huez

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas retained the yellow jesey and won a historic stage atop L'Alpe d'Huez from a select group of just five riders

Thomas out-sprinted Landa and Dumoulin to win one of the most prestigious stages of the Tour de France and becomes the first ever winner on l'Alpe d'Huez in it's 30 ascents.

Sprinting from a select group of jst five riders also containing Froome, Bardet.

In an incredible stage it was Dutchman Kruijswijk who attacked the Team Sky controlled peloton with 73 kms to go and soloed all the way to the Dutch Mountain of L'Alpe d'Huez.

Behind a severly reduced peloton of around 15 riders containing all the favorites hit the base of the final climb, some 4 minutes down on Kruijswijk.

A battered and broken Castroviejo who rode himself inside out delivered what was left of the Team Sky train to the lower 10% slopes.

Inur Zakarin and Bib Jungels the first casulties as the steep slope cracked the riders.

Kwiato took over for Team Sky but cracked in under a kilometre, Egan Bernal took over and lead the just Thomas and Froome up the climb.

Behind all of Team Sky's rivals readied for their attacks. First Nibali, then Quintana, both reeled in by Bernal.

Next it was Landa and Bardet who attacked, Bardet got a good gap but was eventually reeled in with 5kms to go as Bernal cracked and pulled over.

It was at about this point that harrowing scenes saw Nibali hit the deck, caused either by a motorcycle or a fan, he got back up but lost valuable time.

Up front Kruijswijk was caught with just 4km to go , Dumoulin attacked and Thomas followed, but Froome was unable to respond as Bardet sat on his wheel.

With just 1km to go the five riders, Dumoulin,Thomas, Bardet, Landa and Froome were left, with 500m to go, Landa attacked but Thomas, who was the strongest, overhauled him on the line to become the first British rider to win at L'Alpe d'Huez on the 30th ascent of it's steep, feared, iconic slopes and has written himself into cyclig history, forever remembered on one of the 21 hairpins.
