Carapaz wins Chaotic Crash Marred Stage as GC Favorites Lose Time
Columbian Carapaz won the uphill finish from a bunch of just 14 riders who survived a huge crash with 6 kms to go. Yates and Dumoulin lose time.
Simon Yates lost 16 seconds but the big loser was a bloody Tom Dumoulin who fell in the huge crash. Dumoulin leg was bleeding heavily but managed to finish the stage accompanied with his teammates.
The big crash decimated the front of the race, just 14 riders contested the final sprint including Roglic, Carapaz, Ulissi and sprinters Ackermann, Viviani, Demare and Ewan amongst them.
In the final 2 kms as the climb started to bit, Viviani dropped off the pace.
Team UAE Emirates set the pace for Ulissi, with Roglic following, but it was Carapaz who attacked with 600m to go.
Only Ewan could counter and nearly caught Carapaz on the line with Ulissi, Roglic and Demare.
Behind Yates fought to close the gap and lost 16 seconds, but behind Dumoulin lost over 4 minutes, an absolute disaster for him and his team.
