Tour de France stage winner clipped barriers on a tight right hand bend during sensational time trial performance
Wout Van Aert has had to pull out of the Tour de France after suffering a deep wound to his thigh after colliding with barriers on today's time trial in Pau.
Video emerged of Van Aert hitting the deck and not getting up. His team rished to his aid and he was taken to hospital.
Van Aert;s Jumbo-Visma team later confirmed the 24-year-old suffered a deep cut to his right leg and underwent surgery to stich back his muscle apsule and skin.
Head of performance at the Dutch squad, Mathieu Heijboer, said on Friday evening (July 19): “He was operated on by the surgeon. He stitched the capsule and skin and cleaned everything well. He has to stay in hospital for a few days.”
The crash marked an end to van Aert’s impressive debut in the Tour.
Jumbo-Visma team that won the team time trial on stage 2 in Brussels and Van Aert then added his own name to the list of Tour victories, winning a bunch sprint on stage 10.
