Fernando Gaviria strikes again at the Vuelta a San Juan
Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) took his second stage victory on the run into Valle Fértil on Stage 4 of the Vuelta a San Juan
The fourth stage of the Argentinian race was the first encounter in the Mountains on the 185.8-kilometre stage that featured one third category and two first category climbs.
The first escape got away after 70 kilometres and included Robin Carpenter, Filippo Ganna, Matteo Busato, Alain Quispe and Vladimir Ilchenko, amongst others. Due to the riders in the group it was reeled in 20 kms later.
Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) took the final KOM of the day, a category 1 at 104.5km. Race leader, young Evenepoel, got second, he's certainly starting out the season in fine form.
With around 50 kilometres to go, Robin Carpenter tried his luck again along with Peio Goikoetxea and built a gap of around one minute with the peloton, they were caught by the sprinters teams with just 3 kms to go.
UAE Team Emirates did an outstanding job leading out Fernando Gaviria, who delivered his second victory in the race.
The winner of the first stage of the Vuelta a San Juan, Rudy Barbier (Israel Start-Up Nation) finished in the second position and Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Alvaro Hodeg crossed the line in the third position.
Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) remains on leader on overall classification ahead of Filippo Ganna.
