Richard Carapaz outfoxes the Sprinters to take a surprise stage win in Poland
Richard Carapaz hit out with over 300 metres to go on the drag into the finish at Bielsko-Biala, leaping clear of his rivals and holding on to take an impressive victory in stage 3 of Tour of Poland
The Ecuadorian held off Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) by a wheel length on the gradual uphill finish.
That success was enough to elevate Carapaz into the yellow leader’s jersey, holding a four-second advantage after three stages.
“I am very happy. We did a good race today as a team, and winning this way in a sprint was really good”, said Carapaz. “It was very nervous in the last few laps of the circuit, but the guys put me in a really good position in the last corner. They did a fantastic job.”
The Tour of Poland continues tomorrow with a tough 152.9km climbing stage from Bukovina Resort to Bukowina Tatrzanska.
