Fabio Jakobsen the fastest among the big sprinters on opening stage of Volta ao Algarve
Jakobsen beat Viviani, Trentin and Kristoff to the line
The peloton went 195.6 km from Portimao to Lagos on the opening stage of Portugal's biggest race.
The breakaway was formed by three riders: Diego Lopez, Alvaro Trueba and Pedro Paulinho, and it was reeled back by the pack just before 10 km to go.
With 20 km on the final notable climb, Tim Wellens attacked and some big names followed his wheel including Kwiatkowski and Nibali. The attacks were nuetralized as the sprinters teams, Team Sunweb, CCC Team, Fenix-Alpecin and Deceuninck-Quick-Step increased the pace.
The short climb in the final kilometre saw some rider distanced but all the sprinters and their main domestiques managed to hang on.
Deceunick-Quick-Step's Fabio Jakobsen followed wheels during the final sprint before launching his own, which left Elia Viviani (Cofidis) and Matteo Trentin (CCC Team) fighting for the second position. Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) in fourth.
Jakobsen, who won the last stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, took the lead in the GC with the stage win.
Tomorrow's 189 km stage see a mountain top finish on the Alto da Foia!
