Knoxville Fall Classic Double Century

September 29 2018
Vacaville, California, USA

The course is a big figure 8, heading out of town west & north, up the Napa valley, across the hills to the top of Berreyessa, then 40 miles out & over Knoxville Road to Lower Lake. It will be a reverse course of the Davis Double for a section in the middle, and then head down Vacaville's Pleasants Valley to the finish.

The current estimate is 12,600 feet of climbing. Almost 2/3rds of the climbing is prior to lunch. The climb up to Loch Lomond after lunch has proved challenging to many. Just know that once that climb is complete, you have a wonderful descent into Middleton and all the hard stuff is done. There are two cutoffs: 11:30 at rest stop 2 at mile 70; 3:45 at rest stop 3 (the lunch stop) at mile 107.

Ride stats:

The Double Century is 201.1 miles. Total climbing is 12,600 ft. Almost two-thirds of the climbing is in the morning. Most climbing is under 10%, but some of the climbs are quite long. Lunch is at mile 107. Most riders seem to finish between 7 & 10 p.m.    The course is mostly very rural, scenic, lightly traveled, & remote. Lots of it is twisty & turny (is that a word?) up & down, and often in need of repair (but that keeps the cars away!)

Ride Difficulty:
As Chuck Bramwell so eloquently puts it, “There is not a single 'easy' double century”. The nature of riding 200 miles continuously means that it is a very challenging endeavour, even for experienced cyclists. When the original course & timing for Knoxville was conceived, the idea was for it to be (relative to other rides) challenging and moderately difficult, but without significant time pressures, or any form of “race” mentality. The first two years of the ride, I think most riders agreed that was an accurate description. However, in the following two years, the temperatures during the afternoon reached well into the 100+ range, and we have heard numerous riders describing this as “the toughest ride I’ve done this year”.
A number of riders have completed this ride as their first double century. It’s not the ideal “first double”, but there are numerous other much tougher rides out there. We have attempted to set up the course so the afternoon is less demanding than the morning.
