Newton’s Revenge - A Bike Race Up Mt. Washington Auto Road

July 11 2015
Gorham, New Hampshire, USA

Completed in 1861 as the Mt. Washington Carriage Road, the winding all-uphill Mt. Washington Auto Road holds a perennial appeal for athletes with a taste for challenges. Each summer since 1973, cyclists have converged at the base of the Auto Road to contend with what professional riders have called the toughest hillclimb in the world.

By 2006 the original Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb had become so popular that the Mt. Washington Auto Road company created a second race on the same course – Newton’s Revenge – to accommodate the excess demand for this opportunity to test one’s pedaling strength against the Auto Road’s 12 percent grade.

The race is contested on the same exact course as the original Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb, located in Pinkham Notch NH, making Newton’s Revenge the other Toughest Hillclimb in the World.   Please click on Race Details for more information about Newton’s Revenge.  Also click on Mountain Facts – great stats about Mount Washington that you will find very interesting.

The Auto Road will open to race traffic at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014.  Line up for racers is at 8:20 a.m. with the first wave going off at 8:40 a.m. Weather date is Sunday, July 13th.  The Auto Road opens to the general public at 1:00 p.m. or when deemed safe.
