Gran Fondo Dead Sea

March 02 2017
Ein Bokek, Israel

The Gran Fondo (Italian for "the big race”) is a challenging one day cycling event taking place at the lowest point on earth.  The ideal weather conditions of Israel’s mild winter and the spectacular desert scenery will maximize the experience of road riding in this unique area. The Dead Sea is located in the eastern part of Israel and its shores are more than 400 meters (1,300 ft) below sea level.

The goal of this event is to fill the gap between team cycling challenges and professional cycling competitions. This tradition began in Italy in the 70's and evolved mainly in Europe and North America.

The courses offered are:

·         Gran Fondo: 155KM (including time measuring and ranking), a round tour with a total distance of 155KM/96.3 miles and a total of 2,220 M/7284 ft. elevation.

·         Medio Fondo: 100KM (including time measuring and ranking).

·         Mini Fondo: 50KM popular.

The starting point will be in Ein Bokek, the hotel area on the shores of the Dead Sea with many hotels catering to varied budgets. From here, the course takes the riders south along the shore of the Dead Sea towards the wild landscape of the Israeli desert, climbing the famous steep and twisted path of Ma'ale Akrabim (The Scorpions Pass). Riders will then make the climb to the Hatrorim Junction (250 m /820 ft above sea level) and from here the end will be a ride down in a non-competitive end to the finish line back at Ein Bokek.

In previous years, the event has drawn rider participation from all over the world to enjoy this unique sporting event at the Dead Sea.  Gran Fondo Dead Sea is organized by Gran Fondo Israel with the support of Tamar Regional Council, Arad Municipality, The Israeli Ministry of Tourism, The Ministry of Culture and Sport, the Israeli Cycling Association and commercial companies.

Routes: 50, 100, 155km
Difficulty of Greatest Route: D - Difficult terrain with longer, steeper hills
