Atomic Smasher 200

July 27 2019
Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

The Atomic Smasher 200 is a nice long one day road ride. Ride in a group, ride alone, your choice, but it’s a long day on the bike. The ride begins at 5:00 AM at the parking by Boxing Bear area at 1687 Alameda Blvd NW. Although the route generally looks tame, it does have over 12,000 feet of climbing, with the most noticeable climbing beginning around 109 miles.

Segment 1 – Start to Triangle
Begin at 5:00 am. Exit the parking lot onto Alameda heading east in bike lane, north on 4th, and east on Roy  Ave/Tramway, and south to Route 66. East to Hwy 14 North. First good refuel point is at the Triangle convenience store. This will be at 33 miles, after 2700 feet of climbing. Next refuel option is a few miles out, in Madrid.

Segment 2 – Triangle to edge of Santa Fe
Continue north on Hwy 14, through Madrid, to Santa Fe. The first refuel stop in Santa Fe is around 39 miles and 2100 feet of climbing. As you approach Santa Fe on Hwy 14, the first refuel point is at the intersection Hwy 599 and 14..

Segment 3 – Through Santa Fe to Base of the Jemez Climb
Continue north on 14 towards SF. Turn right onto Dinosaur Trail, just before the I-25 N on ramp.  Turn left onto Richards Ave., and follow this past Rodeo Rd, and access the “east/west” bike path, and go east. At Second Street Brewpub, turn right on W San Mateo, and left onto Galisteo St. Turn right on Paseo de Peralta, and left onto Old Santa Fe Trail, at the capital building. Turn left on Water St and an immediate right back onto Ool Santa Fe Tr. Follow Old Santa Fe Tr along the east sode of the plaza and turn right and immediately left onto Washington Ave north.

This becomes Bishop’s Lodge Road, and takes you out of SF. Continue on Bishop’s Lodge Rd. to Tesuque. Continue north through Tesuque, and follow US-285 Frontage Road north. Stay on the south side frontage road until it ends in Tesuque. Cross 285 and continue north on Cities of Gold Rd. until it intersects the Los Alamos Hwy, and turn left towards Los Alamos. Continue towards LA, but don’t forget the refuel point at start of the climbing, this will be about 39 miles and 1700 ft climb from the first store as you approached SF. If you skip refueling at that store you have plenty of other opportunities on your way through Santa Fe and in Tesuque or in Pojoaque. After Pojoaque only place left is the refuel point at the start of the big climb.

Segment 4 – Base of the Jemez Climb to Los Alamos
Continue on Hwy 502, LA Hwy, to Hwy 4, go south towards White Rock. After approximately 1 mile, turn right onto East Jemez Rd (the Truck Route).  This segment climb for 9 miles and 1500 ft. If you chose to refuel in LA, turn right onto Diamond Dr and go down to Mobil station on corner of Diamond & Sandia, refuel and then turn around and ride back to intersection of Diamond Dr and Jemez Rd. to get back on course. If not, be sure to have extra water capacity when refueling at the base of the  Jemez climb. Segments 4 & 5 are the hardest part of this ride, so you will need plenty of fluids. All three of us ran out of water on this section in 2013. It took us 3:10 to get the 37 miles done for segments 4&5!!

Segment 5 – Los Alamos to La Cueva
Climb on West Jemez Rd. to the intersection of Hwy 4, go right and up.  Climb for many miles, and eventually descend into La Cueva, the next refuel point. This segment is approximately 28 miles and 3000 ft climbing from LA.  (Segment 4 and 5 has about 4500 feet of climbing)

Segment 6 – La Cueva to San Ysidro
Follow Hwy 4 downhill for 26.5 miles to San Ysidro, the next intersection.

Segment 7 – San Ysidro to Abq
Follow 550 south to Hwy 528, and turn right. After about 3.5 miles, turn left on Grande Vista Rd., turn left at the T and descend the Corrales Rd and turn right onto Pso Cesar Chaves. Follow this to the T and turn right; follow this as it turns back west, cross the arroyo and go left. Follow this and cross another arroyo and continue left. Turn right on Carey Rd., and right on Loma Largo Rd. Continue on Loma Largo, and turn left on Calle Cuervo NW. Turn right on Corrales Rd and left into the Flying Star/ Boxing Bear/Little Anitas parking area and the finish. This segment is 34 miles.

You are done, have a beer and eat some food at the Boxing Bear!!
