Battle in the Bowl

May 20 2018
Winchester, South East, UK

Cyclocross meets gravel racing an epic setting! Hosted within Matterley Bowl near Winchester, the Battle in the Bowl features two hour races over a stunning four mile circuit, featuring flat-out fast gravel tracks, a breathtaking grass track climb around the rim of the bowl itself, a flying wooded descent back to the arena and over a mile of taped, technical classic ‘cross! 90% of the circuit will be viewable from the massive arena, making Battle in the Bowl a visually inspiring experience for racers and spectators alike!

Battle in the Bowl will be open for entry soon to all levels of rider, including, junior, open and elite categories, with a full day’s programme of racing!

The Course

Course planning has already begun for the Battle in the Bowl, and we’ll be releasing course maps, preview videos and more in due course. In the mean time though, we thought you might like to take a look at the blank canvas. It’s an awesome venue; we have so much to work with!

The core of the circuit is a double horseshoe around the perimeter of the basin on fast gravel roads, and climbing around the lip of the bowl on a broad grass track. This climb can still be attacked at pace, but it’ll sting. The route back down takes in a fast wooded fire road descent that spits you back onto the gravel. The final ingredient in the course mix will be more than a mile of taped classic ‘cross in that huge grass basin. More details on this as we get closer to the event, but the scope to include tight, technical sections, obstacles and features is enormous. That surface is not as flat as it looks either; it rolls enough to ensure that the gradients will come into play even here.
