Dragon Tour

June 07 2020
South Wales, UK

2017 will see the return of the Dragon Tour after its successful introduction in 2015. A three day cycling challenge, the Dragon Tour takes in some of Wales’ finest riding. In addition to riding the famous Dragon Ride on Sunday 11th June, you can participate in two additional days of cycling in South Wales on Friday 9th & Saturday 10th June. We have 500 spaces for the Dragon Tour where riders will cover two contrasting routes, the first day winding through the Gower Peninsula, the second climbing up in to the western side of the Brecon Beacons before riders complete their Tour experience by choosing one of the four distances of the Dragon Ride.

Entry packages for the Tour (which include the cost of entering the Dragon Ride) do not include accommodation. If you would like to book accommodation, we partner with a selection of cycling friendly hotels in the area – watch this space for more details on how to book.

Further details on each of the elements of the Dragon Tour are below and we look forward to welcoming you to a fantastic three days in the saddle providing the ultimate test of riding – a truly unique experience in the UK cycling calendar.

The first day of the Tour takes in a route along and across the Gower peninsula. It features some stunning views across the south Wales coast, particularly at the feed station in Rhossili. The route heads south from the Stadium to the main route along the coast featuring the famous Mumbles coastline. From there we turn in land past Langland Bay and then down to Caswell Bay. We then traverse across to Oxwich where there are a series of narrow lanes to navigate. We then head west to the tip of the peninsula at Rhossili where the feed station is based at the Causeway Café of the Worms Head Hotel. Having re-fuelled we head back up the hill from Rhossili and head north to Burry Green and then back east across the peninsula and its varied landscapes before heading back to Swansea.

CLIMBING: just over 1000m

The second day provides a totally different challenge with two big climbs over the Black Mountain (in the opposite direction to the main Ride and Betws Mountain. We leave Swansea heading east to Skewen where we turn and head north to Glais and then Pontardawe where we pick up the road to the Brecon Beacons. Through Brynammam and up over the Black Mountain. On the descent we cut west and stop at the feed station with stunning views north. The route then winds north towards Bethlehem and at Ffairfach turns south to Trapp and then down to Ammanford where we climb up and over Betws Mountain. Following the long descent virtually to the edge of Swansea, we wiggle our way back to the Liberty Stadium.

The final day of the inaugural Dragon Tour is of course the famous Dragon Ride. Now in its 13th year, the Ride incorporates 4 distances from the legendary Dragon Devil, a 300km epic introduced to an intrepid 500 riders in 2014 that includes some of the most stunning terrain imaginable as well as treacherous climbs up the Devils’s Elbow and Devil’s Staircase, to the Gran Fondo, Medio Fondo and Macmillan 100 options which provide stern and stunning tests of riding through the Brecon Beacons. The Dragon Ride starts and finishes at Margam Park near Port Talbot and Dragon Tour riders can select their option below.
