2017 Vuelta a Espana

2020 La Vuelta

October 20 - November 08 2020
Nîmes, France

The 2017 La Vuelta  is played out between 19 August and 10 September. The last Grand Tour of the season leaves from Nîmes, France, and the finish is in the Spanish capital Madrid.

In line with tradition the 2017 Vuelta a España begins with a team time trial. Start and finish of stage 1 are in the French city Nîmes and the distance will be shorter than in 2016, when the TTT was almost 28 kilometres. The 2nd stage is held in France also before the riders cross the Pyrenees in stage 3 or stage 4. Then a flat stage travels through Catalunya to a finish in or near Tarragona on the Mediterranean coast.

The first rest day is on Monday 28 August. The second rest day is one week later, on 4 September.

After giving the hot south a cold shoulder in 2016, rumour has it Coín and Antequera are to host two stages in the 2017 Vuelta. Reportedly, a summit finish Pico Veleta in the Sierra Nevada is in the pipeline also. The mountain peaks at 3,398 metres and the summit lies at the end of the highest paved road in Europe. To get there you have to climb 43 kilometres at an average gradient of 6.2%.

On the opposite side of the country, Cantabria should be up for some spectacle in the last week. Los Machucos, aka Collado de la Espina, is rumoured to bring its steepest sections of 28% to the table in stage 19. The day before (or after) the infamous Angliru is supposed to make its come back after a last appearance in the 2013 Vuelta, when Kenny Elissonde climbed to victory and Chris Horner cemented his overall lead – ultimately leading to winning that edition -, despite tireless atacks by Nibali. The Alto de El Engliru is a 12.5 kilometres torture at 10.1%. The steepest part at 23.6% goes by the significant name Cueña les Cabres, or goat path. This is 3 kilometres before the top.

The 2017 Vuelta a España will close with an evening stage in Madrid.
