These are the things you should keep in mind to get Grinder Ready in 3 months!

Le Grand du Nord Route Scout 2016

We have dreams about a course like this (that’s how nerdy we are about Heck courses). Lake Superior, forests, rushing streams, hills, sustained climbs, sweeping descents. Remote. Really remote. Moose sign, wolf sign, spring frogs, broad winged hawks, merlins, white throated sparrows. The occasional hay field. More woods.

The roads are mostly dirt with glacial gravel on top.

Heck of the North Productions have completed the mapping of both the 100 and 50 mile courses for the inaugural Le Grand du Nord. Here are some thoughts to consider before taking the start line this Saturday, May 28.

Conquering the Dirt – The Hell of Hunterdon

I marvel at the pros in races like Paris Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, bouncing around on dirt and cobbles, still riding at speeds of 25+mph, pushing their road bikes to the limit of what they were meant to do. They have to have complete faith in their skills and just keep their heads up and their eyes on the road ahead, pushing on through any obstacle that comes their way.

The cycling pros who race in these one-day spring classics have to contend with dirt, gravel and cobblestones all while still riding their skinny tire road bikes.

These races are a test of strength, skill and grit.

What is a Gravel Grinder?

There are a handful of Gravel Grinders that have shaped this new genre of cycling invented in the U.S. Midwest over 10 years ago and is now spreading globally. One of the most obvious indicators of the new genre’s rapid growth is the success of the Dirty Kanza, which kicked off in 2006 with just 34 riders. 10 years later its now the “Worlds Premier Endurance Gravel Road Race” in the Midwest U.S. along with the likes of Trans Iowa and the Almanzo 100.

Dirty Kanza sold out this year for 1,900 riders in less than 3 hours.

The finishing line of the Dirty Kanza, a 200-mile bicycle race through the Flint Hills of Kansas, is a place where personal discoveries are made and raw emotions reveal themselves.

There are a handful of gravel grinders that are shaping the future of the Gravel Grinder genre. The Dirty Kanza 200, a 200-mile gravel road race through the Flint Hills east central Kansas. It is hard, but not impossible even while you’re struggling to turn the pedals over into 20mph headwinds and stay hydrated despite blistering temperatures and oppressive humidity, you can still enjoy the rolling hills and prairie skies.
