Valverde rounds off second Catalunya GC success with third stage win

Alejandro Valverde crowned its overall victory in the 97th Volta Ciclista a Catalunya with a third stage victory in Barcelona.

'Bala' claimed honours at the 138 km course, with eight laps of the famous Montjuïc mountain, to again respond to perfect Movistar team-work.

The Movistar Team rounded off an excellent week that saw the Blues claiming all four main classifications of the first Spanish WorldTour race of the season, putting up their 2017 victory tally to 13 in the process.

Team Sky’s GC hopes were dashed on a bad day at the Volta a Catalunya.

The British team were caught out by a split in the peloton on the day’s first climb. GC contenders took advantage of a split on the first climb of the day on the Alt de Bot. A gap opened up and Valverde and Contador put the hammer down on the descent.

Team Sky and Chris Froome soon found themselves distanced by the peloton and rolled in 20 minutes down much to the embarrassment of Team Sky's sports director.

Spaniard claims sensational victory after attacking Froome and Contador on the final climb to Lo Port. Alejandro Valverde was again unstoppable on the Cat-1 climb of Lo Port, end of stage five in the Volta a Catalunya.

The Movistar Team's GC hope got back to the race leader on Friday, three days after being neglected the jersey following a controversial, collective one-minute penalty after Banyoles' team time trial.

Tejay van Garderen lost over a minute and stands in 6th place overall.

BMC Racing Team's Tejay Van Garderen leads the Volta a Catalunya after 4 stages.

Cofidis' Nacer Bouhanni won the final sprint after the stage was shortened due to snow.

Chris Froome, Gaudu, Valverde and Soler attacked on second-category Tudo del Puig, hoping to get away but the Sprinters teams reeled them in with 5 kms to go.

Alejandro Valverde claims 101st career victory atop La Molina, clinches 10th success for Blues in 2017 by beating top Volta GC riders.

The 23-year-old local launched one of the final attacks that set up the finish for his leader, who now sits back in full contention after the one-minute penalty the race jury put on all his team-mates this very morning.

Thanks to the 10-second bonus and small splits in the finale, Valverde now ranks 4th overall, 45" behind race leader Tejay Van Garderen.
