Amateurs and Pros Tackled the Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb and Gran Fondo
Colorado Springs, Olympic City, USA, Colorado, August 13th - Over 300 cyclists took on the challenge of the Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb, which is the ultimate test for cyclists as the participants compete on the same 12.42 mile course that the automobiles and motorcycles use in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb every summer. U.S. National Hillclimb Championship Results
In the mens Pro Category, Leroy Popowski from Juwi took first place in a time of 1h 10m 13 secs ahead of Rory Kelly, Simple Racing and Johnathan Freter from Astellas Cycling Team. Leroy hold the fastest recorded time of 1h 8m 36 secs.
Johnathan Freter from Astellas Cycling Team said "Yesterday I finished my season at the USA Cycling Hill Climb Championships. Leroy, who has won every modern edition of the Pike's Peak hill climb, proved that Pike's Peak is his climb. Nearly 21 kilometers with a finish above 14,000 ft, it hurts. No really, it hurts!"
"We started at the race with a steady paced that slowly cut the field down one rider at a time. At the half way point there was only 5 of us left when Chris Bulter attacked. I knew he would attack but this early?! First, I freaked out a little when I couldn't match his acceleration, then found my composure. Slowly, I rode my way back into 4th, and could see 3rd in my sights. The unmistakable figure of Butler was just ahead. With 500 meters to go I made the catch and this time it was my turn for an unmatched acceleration. I reached the sunny peak in a time of 1:10:52. Good for 3rd on the day, about 40ish seconds behind Leroy. Thanks to everyone that helped me suffer and have some more fun on my bike!"
"I still have unfinished business in this sport so I'm looking forward to 2017 with another few months of some Colorado altitude in my lungs. See you on all soon!"
In the womens Pro Category, Krista Doebel-Hickok Cylance Pro Cycling Team was fastest in a time of 1h 25m 26 secs ahead of Breanne Nalder Visit Dallas DNA Pro cycling and Margot Clyne Groove Subaru Excel Sports.
The fastest junior was Benjamin Wright from Dire Wolf Racing in a time of 1h 16m 36 secs beating the previous junior record held by Nicholas Bollen.
