UCI Gran Fondo World Championships under way this week in Australia

Riders who excelled at one of the qualifying events held around the world in the last 12 months have earned the right to line up this week in the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. They will take place in Perth, Western Australia, from September 1 to 4.

More than 400 athletes will compete in the time trials on Thursday September 1, with some 1,150 riders taking part in the road races three days later. The competitors come from 39 different countries, with Mongolia entering a rider in 2016 for the first time.

The UCI Gran Fondo Series is the new label given to the former UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) which was launched in 2011 for amateur riders. The UWCT Final becomes the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, and the UCI World Champions’ jerseys and medals have been redesigned accordingly.

This year, 11 qualifying events were held in different countries across five continents. The top 25% of finishers in each race qualified for this week’s UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. The riders will compete for the world title in 17 different age categories (nine for men and eight for women) with ages ranging from 19 to 70+.

Wind is expected to be a major factor in Thursday’s time trials, which take place on Rottnest Island. The 19.5km course takes in the entire island, with the wind changing direction four times.

The 154.5km road race for men aged under 55 includes a total of 2010m of climbing. Men over 55 and all the women will race on a 105.8km course with 1250m of climbing.

Perth has been part of the series since its launch five years ago, organising qualifying events each year including 2016. While the time trial course has been completely redesigned for the UCI World Championships, the first part of the road race is the same as for the qualifier held in March this year.

In the last five years, USA has won the most medals with a total of 71 (including 36 gold) followed by Italy with 49 medals (18 gold) and Slovenia with 38 medals (13 gold).

Thomas Desonay from Belgium Taking Part

Gran Fondo Guide's European partner and Director of Altitude Training, Thomas Desonay is taking part in the competition and has already been out checking out the courses and commented "Tomorrow starts the serious things with the world championships against the clock! Departure at 6 H in the morning with the boat, direction rottness island, an island off the coast of Australia. Concerning the departures, Hoff is at 14 h 24m and me, 14:00.

Journey of 19.4 km, continuously exposed to the wind the fact that we're doing the tour of the island."

Good luck to Thomas and all the competitors - all worthy champions to make it to the finals in Perth!
